Specialized Transit

Overview

Specialized Transit is an application-based shared-ride service that accommodates residents of Niagara who have a disability which prevents them from using conventional transit services.

Applications will be reviewed against the eligibility criteria. If your application is approved, you will be eligible to book trips. Bookings are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

If approved, you will be eligible to book trips on all specialized transit services in Niagara: Fort Erie (FAST), Niagara Falls (Chair-a-van), Niagara Specialized Transit (NST), St. Catharines (Paratransit), and Welland (WellTrans).

If denied, all Niagara Region Transit buses are fully accessible. Learn more about fixed-routes or accessibility.

Clear Paths Required

Specialty Transit and OnDemand services may be impacted by severe weather. For the safety of our customers and drivers, customers must remove snow and ice to provide a clear path to and from the first accessible door of their residence. Please note that if their street is not clear of snow and ice, it may be unsafe for the vehicle to travel, in which case our staff will notify the customer to advise of a trip cancellation.

Persons wishing to use specialized transit must have a disability that prevents them from using conventional transit.

Disability alone does not constitute eligibility. Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis and are based on the applicant’s functional ability to use conventional transit some of all of the time. It’s not a medical decision deemed by the applicant’s physician. It is also not based on the applicant’s income, age, or lack of conventional transit in their area.

Niagara to Hamilton Transfer Hub

Niagara Region Transit has teamed up with DARTS to introduce a convenient transfer hub located in Stoney Creek, just off Highway 8. This initiative is designed to seamlessly connect our Niagara Specialized Transit (NST) riders with DARTS services, enabling easier and more flexible travel to your desired locations in Hamilton.

How It Works:

  • Book Your Trip with both NST AND DARTS to ensure a smooth connection between the two services.
  • Enjoy the Ride: Once booked, NST will take you to the Hamilton Transfer Hub in Stoney Creek, where you'll transition to a DARTS vehicle that will drive you to your final destination in Hamilton.
