Extreme Weather Relief>
Transit and Public Facilities
Niagara Transit offers free rides to designated public facilities during official Environment and Climate Change Canada weather advisories, including cold-weather advisories and heat warnings. These facilities provide essential shelter and comfort during extreme weather conditions.
Extreme Cold Alerts
Niagara Region issues cold-weather alerts when temperatures in some parts of the region are forecast to drop below -15°C and/or the wind chill is forecast to be below -20°C. By comparison, Environment Canada issues Extreme Cold Alerts for southern Ontario only when temperatures or wind chill reach -30°C for at least 2 hours. We use a lower threshold to protect vulnerable populations, ensuring free rides and open warming centres.
Extreme Heat Alerts
During extreme heat days when Environment Canada issues heat warnings, Niagara Transit offers free rides to designated cooling centres. These centres provide a safe and comfortable place to cool off and stay hydrated, including local community centres, libraries, and designated public spaces.
