Significant Updates to Niagara Transit Regional Routes

We're making some significant changes to our regional bus routes starting July 2nd that will affect how you travel to specific destinations during weekday daytime hours. Here's everything you need to know to keep your travel plans on track.

What's Changing?

Starting July 2nd, our regional routes will no longer stop at these mall locations during weekday daytime hours (Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. - 6 p.m.):

Route 40/45: Fairview Mall
Route 50/55: Pen Centre
Route 60/65: Montrose Rd. & Lundy's Lane
Route 70/75: Pen Centre, Seaway Mall

Important: These stops will still be served by local buses, and regional routes will continue serving these locations during evening hours (weekdays from 6 p.m. until end of service).

How This Affects Your Trip

The good news is that in most cases, your total travel time will remain about the same. You'll just need to make a connection between regional and local routes.

Here's how it works: Instead of staying on the regional bus all the way to your destination, you'll transfer to a local route that serves your final stop. When you board your regional bus, simply ask the driver for a transfer - you won't need to pay twice.

Example Trip

Let's say you're travelling from Welland to Pen Centre on Route 75. Previously, you'd stay on the regional bus for the entire trip, arriving at 9:12 a.m. Now, you'll get off at Brock Hub, transfer to Local Route #335 with your transfer, and still arrive at Pen Centre at 9:12 a.m.

Why We're Making These Changes

These adjustments are part of our ongoing effort to create a more efficient and reliable transit system. Regional buses were often getting delayed at busy locations like malls, which affected their ability to stay on schedule for longer-distance travellers. By separating regional and local services more clearly, we can:

  • Keep regional buses on time for longer trips between communities
  • Provide more reliable local service within communities
  • Reduce overcrowding on regional routes
  • Improve safety by reducing bus traffic in crowded mall parking areas

Planning Your Trip

Step 1: Check if your usual stops are affected by the changes listed above.

Step 2: If your destination is affected, plan to transfer from your regional bus to the appropriate local route.

Step 3: Ask for a transfer when you board your regional bus - no additional fare required.

Step 4: Use the transfer to board the local bus that serves your final destination.

Evening Service Continues

If you typically travel to these locations in the evening, nothing changes for you. Regional routes will continue serving Fairview Mall, Pen Centre, Montrose Rd. & Lundy's Lane, and Seaway Mall from 6 p.m. until the end of service.
